Director of Development
We are looking for a Director of Development / R&D Manager
Lead people, projects and priorities at the forefront of nuclear imaging
Would you like to lead a highly skilled, multidisciplinary R&D team developing products for some of the world’s most demanding and safety-critical environments? Are you a people-focused leader who can create structure, establish clear priorities and drive several development projects forward at the same time?
Then this could be the right opportunity for you.
Ahlberg Cameras is growing, and our R&D organization currently consists of approximately 25 employees and consultants. To strengthen our ability to deliver customer projects while maintaining momentum in the strategically important development of our standard product portfolio, we are establishing a new position as Director of Development / R&D Manager.
Today, our CTO carries both the technical responsibility and a substantial part of the operational leadership of R&D. As Director of Development, you will assume responsibility for the operational side of the organization, including people management, resource planning, project execution, development processes and performance follow-up.
The CTO will retain the overall technical responsibility and will increasingly focus on the company’s technical vision, emerging technologies, new product opportunities and long-term product strategy. You will work closely together, with clearly defined and complementary responsibilities.
Put simply: the CTO defines where the technology is going – you create the organization, plans and execution needed to get us there.
About Ahlberg Cameras
Ahlberg Cameras is a Swedish technology company founded in 1981. We develop and deliver high-quality, radiation-tolerant visual inspection, CCTV, lighting and software systems, as well as customized inspection solutions for nuclear reactors, nuclear waste facilities and research institutes.
Our products and services have been delivered to more than 200 reactors in over 35 countries, and our cameras are used at more than 40 percent of nuclear power plants worldwide. Ahlberg Cameras has approximately 50 employees. R&D, production, sales and administration are located at our headquarters in Norrtälje, Sweden, where all equipment is produced and tested. More than 90 percent of our sales are made to customers outside Sweden.
We work closely with our customers and provide turnkey solutions that may include design, customization, installation, training, maintenance and outage support. Our products operate in environments where reliability, safety and precision are essential.
About the role
As Director of Development, you will have overall operational responsibility for the R&D organization. You will report directly to the CEO and be a member of the Ahlberg Cameras management team.
You will work closely with the CTO, Product Manager, Quality, Sales, Production and Purchasing. The purpose of the role is not to introduce another layer of hierarchy. Instead, you will help preserve and further develop our flat and inclusive organization by creating clear priorities, transparent decision-making and strong collaboration between functions.
You do not need to be the organization’s leading technical specialist. Your strength is your ability to lead people, maintain an overall perspective, turn priorities into realistic plans and ensure that the R&D team has the conditions required to deliver successfully.
Your main responsibilities
- Lead and develop an R&D organization of approximately 25 employees and consultants.
- Hold full people-management responsibility, including performance and development reviews, salary reviews in consultation with the CEO, leave and absence planning, and competence development.
- Recruit employees and consultants in close cooperation with the CTO.
- Take ownership of operational resource and capacity planning across parallel customer projects and standard product development.
- Drive and follow up development projects, with a clear focus on objectives, schedules, staffing, dependencies, risks and deliverables.
- Establish transparent priorities and replan efficiently when technical challenges, procurement lead times or changing customer requirements affect the project portfolio.
- Lead recurring R&D planning, prioritization and performance-review forums.
- Represent R&D resource ownership in the company’s project and portfolio governance.
- Own, maintain and continuously improve the R&D development process within the ISO 9001 quality management system.
- Coordinate and regularly update the product and development roadmap together with the CTO, Product Manager and Sales.
- Consolidate and report R&D status, capacity and organizational development to the CEO, CFO, management team and, when relevant, the Board of Directors.
- Contribute to R&D budgeting, forecasting and financial follow-up together with the CTO and Product Manager.
We believe you have
- Several years of experience leading people within technical product development, R&D, engineering or a comparable organization.
- Proven people-management experience and a genuine interest in developing individuals and teams.
- Strong experience in project management, resource planning and capacity management across several concurrent projects.
- Experience balancing long-term product development with time-critical, customer-specific deliveries.
- Experience developing working methods, processes and performance follow-up within a quality-managed environment, preferably ISO 9001.
- Sufficient technical understanding to engage effectively with specialists in areas such as mechanical engineering, electronics, software, system design, testing and technical documentation.
- Professional proficiency in both Swedish and English, written and spoken.
As a person, you are
Structured, empathetic, solution-oriented and low-ego. You listen to your team while remaining confident in making decisions, setting priorities and creating clarity when several projects compete for the same resources.
You view leadership as a way of enabling others to succeed. You build trust by being present, consistent and transparent, and you thrive in a flat organization where ideas and responsibilities are not limited by job titles.
It is an advantage if you have
- A background in mechanical design, product development, manufacturing or machining.
- Experience from the nuclear industry or another regulated and safety-critical industry.
- Experience with complex products and systems combining mechanics, electronics, software and production.
- Experience with project portfolios, product roadmaps, budgets or R&D performance management.
What we offer
- A newly established and central leadership position with significant influence over how our growing R&D organization operates and develops.
- The opportunity to work with advanced technology that contributes to safer and more efficient operations for customers worldwide.
- An environment where development, testing, production and commercial functions work closely together.
- A highly skilled, committed and collaborative team that cares about both results and each other.
- A flat organization with short decision paths and real opportunities to make an impact.
- Wellness activities during working hours.
- Flexible working hours.
- Six weeks of annual leave.
